Bus (Ado Station)

From Cancun International Airport, you can conveniently reach Playa del Carmen or Tulum via the ADO bus service. Buses depart every 30 minutes to 1 hour and cost around $350 MXN (approximately $20 USD). Upon arrival in Playa del Carmen, transfer to a second bus (ADO, AU, or Mayab) to continue your journey to Tulum for an additional $74 MXN (about $5 USD). Among these options, the ADO bus is generally considered the best choice.
Buses from Cancun to Playa del Carmen run frequently, with ADO offering a direct service from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. From Playa del Carmen, buses depart hourly or thereabouts, with the bus station located at the southern end of Fifth Avenue near Playacar. ADO buses charge $130 MXN and make stops at Xcaret and Xel-ha on the way to Tulum. Alternatively, Mayab buses cost $80 MXN and make more frequent stops en route to Tulum. Both options provide air conditioning.
If you prefer a more flexible alternative, consider taking a "colectivo" van from Playa del Carmen. You can find these on Calle 2, close to Avenida 20. A one-way trip costs $50 MXN per person (as of June 2022). Colectivos depart as soon as they are full, which typically takes just a few minutes. Be sure to ask specifically for the Tulum ruins, as the town of Tulum is a separate stop. The colectivo will drop you off and pick you up at the side of Federal Highway 307 (the same intersection where the buses stop), from where you can walk the remaining 850 meters to the ruins.
Rental Cars

Rental cars offer a convenient and flexible way to explore the Tulum area, with reasonable prices available. Upon arrival, shop around for the best rates and don't hesitate to negotiate. It's a good idea to check with your credit card company beforehand to see if they provide automatic insurance coverage, as this can help you avoid purchasing additional insurance that rental agencies often try to sell. When checking prices online, make sure to confirm that the displayed price is the final one, as some companies may add surcharges at the last minute when you're about to sign the contract.
